通常の Linux カーネルのアイドルループで使われている HLT 信号は、Athlon/Duron/AthlonXP ファミリのプロセッサ (以下では Athlon と総称します) では通常は大きなパワーセーブ効果は得られません。 Athlon プロセッサで本当にパワーセーブを行いたい場合は、プロセッサを STPGNT-Mode (Stop Grant Mode) にする必要があります。 このモードではプロセッサはフロントサイドバス (FSB) から切り離され、CPU 内部の部分の電源が切られ、電力節減のためにクロックを落とします。
最近のマザーボード/チップセットは、HLT 信号を検出した際に STPGNT モードにする機能をサポートしています。
