About this site

This web site is managed and maintained as a voluntary project of the webmasters of www.linux.or.jp, to provide useful informations in utilizing Linux especially from a user's point of view.

The site is running thanks to donated resources provided by JLA and mirror sites. By virtue of CVS, we are working distributively via networks, to keep the contents fresh and update, and of course e-mails on a mailing list and even IRC (Internet Relay Chat) are used to communicate with each other. Most of the pages at our site are written in Japanese only, except for a few pages.

About JLA

JLA (Japan Linux Association) (formerly known as JLUG (Japan Linux Users Group)) was established on April 1, 1999, to promote the circulation of Linux. JLA's policy is to help "development of Linux". Linux, here we mean the whole system composed of the kernel, libraries and various commands.

On the basis of the above policy, JLA has following objectives.

  1. To make the better environment for running Linux, and to share it with members.
  2. To contribute to the development and the distribution of Linux.
  3. To contribute to industry, science and culture with Linux.

Outline of JLA's actual activities is as follows:

  1. Maintaining the communication channels among members and other people/organizations.
  2. Providing Linux technical information to members.
  3. Propagating Linux in Japan.
  4. Cooperation with Linux users overseas.

More concretely;

  1. JLA provides methods for exchanging technical and other information (e.g. mailing lists and netnews).
  2. JLA provides disk space at our web servers, as well as domain names for various Linux projects.
  3. JLA provides FTP site for distributing software.
  4. JLA maintains the web site (http://jla.linux.or.jp/ (written in Japanese)). JLA collects and classifies pointers to resources on Linux.

About the word "Linux"

We use the word "Linux" to denote the whole computing system including the Linux kernel, various programs and libraries. There is an opinion claiming that such a whole system should be called "GNU/Linux" because in many cases it is realized by employing many tools and libraries provided by the GNU project, a notable point we think.

But here in this site, we think we should pay more attention to the way how Linus Torvalds, the original author of the Linux kernel, calls. So that we let the simple word "Linux" mean the whole computing system.
